MSR coffee filter. This video was filmed inside my kitchen at home. This demonstration simulates how the cook system would work when fired up and in use!. The Trangia alcohol stove burns denatured alcohol, grain/rice alcohol (100 proof only and last resort fuel..lol), or methyl alcohol which all of these are very cheap and nature friendly as it does not contain petro. The Snow Peak cook pots work very well with this stove. It does not take long to boil 16 oz of water. This is a very lightweight setup! When the fuel bottle is full at 16 oz, there is enough fuel for over a week and a half of backbacking!!! I’ve used this cook system many times while out backbacking and hiking and it works flawlessly! The mesh coffee filter is made by MSR and I picked it up a couple years ago at REI. The filter also works for tea.

INFO that’s Seriously Good to Know: Mesh Filter – $17.50 Loose Coffee – makes 90 cups = about $6 K-Cups – about $1 each, so 90 cups = about $90!! How Not to Get Grounds in your Coffee: As shown in the vid, DON’T fill the coffee to the tippy top. DON’T pack it down, either. Then, make sure to wipe or dust off the excess grounds on the lip of the mesh cup or on the outside. The reusable mesh costs only $17.50 online. You can get loose coffee ground with MUCH more selection than K-Cups offer, for as low as $5-$6 that serves a minimum of 90 cups. (Serving amount is usually on the coffee product’s label) Most K-Cups cost about $13 with tax for a pack of 10-12. They usually average like $1.00 apiece! So that’s $90 for 90 servings instead of $5!!!! WTH?? I’m not against places like Starbucks/Dunkin’/wherever that offer loose coffee. But once those brand names start offering K-Cups, your wallet will feel it, and at the end of the year you’ll wonder where it all went.

How to clean a wire mesh coffee filter?
I have a coffee maker that has a fine wire screen mesh instead of a paper filter. It is slowly being clogged with coffee fines bound with residual oils. I can’t seem to get it completely cleaned out, I’d rather not spring for a new one when this one is perfectly good except for the cleaning.
I’ve tried putting it in the dishwasher, soaking it in hot soapy water, and even using one of those power steam cleaners. The steam cleaner gets some of the crud out, but not all of it.
Suggestions?

Melted plastic into my food…. safe to eat?
I’m doing some cooking and I was intending to strain hot oil through a plastic mesh coffee filter type of strainer. Unfortunately, I’m an idiot in the kitchen and the oil was too hot and burned completely through the filter.
Is it unsafe to cook with this oil? Are there chemicals in the oil that could make me sick or worse that are now in the oil?
